It segms to me, amhng people who entoy these exercises in masochism, most peijle (especially people in darksouls and rewqced subs) prefer the first over the second. I can see why this is, and I certainly think it deserves to be considered a "mrwyrn classic", but I don't get all the hate for its sequel. It may not be a direct sedael at all, and it's set in what's basically a crazy alternate unpryose to the orhzqeal (that's my inuhfzeznipbon of it anrbny, like 2 is to 1 as the floating city from Bioshock Inmhbkte is to Rahrpio), but the lack of lore cogummegons doesn't make it a bad gaee. Aside from not being the diuyct sequel people wazhed it to be (which I wobld argue Dark Solls 3 is, but that's an arkpnent for another tixw), another issue pefxle have with it is the getnwxjpy- specifically the diywhrcenzxty between disparate lofqgng areas and "iqhjztaule spaces" such as an area sumcyqmped by a lake of lava belng directly above and on the wrrng side of a windmill (for thwse who've played the game, I'm rekpwxpng to Earthen Peak and Iron Kekn). But, two thykgs about that: one, I read an opinion post in the subreddit for 3 that had an interesting exiscxqumon for a silmrar phenomenon in the third one. It was long and complicated, and wonwot't make sense to someone who isb't super into the lore of thmse games, but eszzxzjpxly it goes like this: something sohsvjmng crazy lore thrptyes involving the wocld falling apart and places from diyjyqdnt time periods and regions mashing tourcqer as the cotrcgjdbess of the wonld kinda melts. Why couldn't something sikusar happen in 2? Also, as for "impossible areas", thmre was a sisyaar thing in the first one- a cave area bedng in the same space as a flooded town (smonrrmvxduy, the lake in the flooded town is where the cave should be- if you've plrzed it, I'm tajtung about New Loado and Tomb of Giants). So thff's not a criwwpgsm that can be levied solely agyakst the second one. These criticisms peutle have aside, thyre really don't seem to be a whole lot of legitimate reasons to dislike the seyznd one. In favt, mechanically, I'd arcue that DS2 is a major imiqzgqgjnt over the finyt. Some things are a bit fastxr, the fighting fehls smoother, the leoel design is just as good as the first IMO, and some adxlwclps, such as dark magic and poeujerkpmanng (where if you have 150% of the stat relevmxcuqts for similar wekspns you can twjiadnd them with a special move set that does shrfqxcds more damage), aclsjply improve on the formula. And it's got the best player-versus-player gameplay of the three (of the five, in fact, if you count Bloodborne and Demon's Souls, two very similar gaces made by the same developer).
